Nature’s Glory: Spring in Round Top
“Every Spring is the only Spring, a perpetual astonishment.”~Ellis Peters
Every Spring is a miracle, but this one has felt especially joyous, coming out of this year’s “Covid Winter.” The earth softens and seems to sigh with relief as the sun kisses the ground. The stream burbles with delight, bouncing over the creek stones, sometimes softly, and other times harder, swollen with the melting ice and snow. The greens are electric- first small buds on the trees, then bursting forth and glowing in the light. Here in Round Top, or as those who live here call it “Roundtopia,” we know to bring in our bird feeders. The black bears are coming out of hibernation hungry, looking for anything to eat.
The community awakens, too. As you drive up Winter Clove Road you see the local resorts doing their Spring clean-up, clearing the leaves and branches from their grounds and sprucing up the property with plantings and fresh paint.
Round Top is a wonderland, truly! Every morning we awaken to birdsong, and the days grow warmer and longer. At Living Stone, the flora and fauna in our woods are exploding! It seems like the ferns have spread to every nook and cranny. Django and I were delighted to spy 2 baby foxes on our driveway, frolicking in the dark as we drove up. It seems they have moved their den, but we are on the lookout for them all the time. The deer wander the property, and it is a constant battle to keep them from our gardens, pretty as they are. There is nothing better than walking through our woods in springtime, over the mossy path, across the stream, and into our neighbor’s field. Every day we walk in gratitude for this beautiful world, this most precious life.
Happy Spring! xo~ Heather
